First Steps Into A Dance Career (2)

What you want to learn will largely determine where you choose to audition for your career training.

If you do plan to take this route described and go and train at a dance college or course then there are a few things that you will want to think about in advance.

The first is the cost. If your parents are supportive in your career choice (hopefully they are) will they be able to cover (or part-cover the) fees? And can you chip in and help with any additional payments that need to be made?

The issue of funding is key. Pehaps you can apply for government grants if they exist in your area, write letters to your local MP and ask what options you have. Or maybe you have a good relationship with your bank and they will let you take on a loan with favourable terms.

It is helpful to know all of this in advance, because once you get accepted into a dance college it will probably be a little late to start thinking about it.

If you need to save money in order to go, then you need to think about this well in advance. You may perhaps need to take a year out working in order to save the money to go to college.

If you are unfortunate there may be no way for you to afford the fees. Don't depair, keep on looking, keep writing letters to MPs to see if they can help and look at your other options.

Perhaps there is a shorter 1 or 2 year course that you can attend instead that can still provide a good level of training.

Or like many university students see if there are ways you can save money, for example by living with your parents while you are at college.

The other thing that is worth considering in advance is your audition preparation. All reputable colleges will have these, and of course you have to do well at these in order to get into the colllege in the first place!

The different establishments will have different audition procedures, however many of them will want you to dance a solo of your choice. They may want you to showcase different styles of movement in your solo and so you can prepare for it. The length of the solo can vary from college to college but you can prepare for this well in advance.

Other parts of the audition you cannot prepare for, they may want to see you participate in a dance class in which case your performance in that class will help them to decide.

In order to get into dance college you need to be good enough or have enough potential in their eyes. And so you need to practise your dancing regularly and go to dance classes in the years prior in order to make that happen!

This is why if you're not taking steps to improve your dancing on a regular basis, you need to start now!
