For many dancers it will be tough going making a living in the industry even if they are with the best agencies around.
If the agency could take care of every dancer, find you jobs and allow you to lounge on your back the rest of the time then they
would probably get paid a lot more than the commission that they charge.
In all likelihood you will probably have to remain on the lookout for dance auditions and castings at all times and not become
totally reliant on the agency unless they are doing an exceptional job.
This will usually mean you will have more than one agent representing you. Going for sole representation is a risk unless you
are already a very well established dancer or if the agency has an otherwise well heeled track record.
So how are you going to pay for your rent, your clothes and your biscuits?
As unfortunate as it sounds you may need to take a 'normal' job to begin with. Ideally a night job like waitressing or something similar
so that you can attend auditions during the day.
Then when you're doing well you can quit that job and make dancing your full-time living which I'm sure is the goal for most of
you!
In order to speed up this process you need to find the means to get access to auditions and castings. If you are a really good dancer and
attend enough auditions and castings, you will find some work.
In this day and age dancers are more connected than ever before. Dancers are finding out about auditions on Facebook, Twitter and
various means.
Stay in touch with dancers to see what's going on and keep on attending dance classes when you're not working so that you can get
better.
Join Facebook groups to do with dance auditions in your area, join agency groups to find out when they are auditioning. See what's
happening on the notice boards at the dance studio.
In other words keep your eyes and ears open and you will hear of more auditions. If you lay on your back and just let the work come
to you, you may be laying on your back for a very long time before anything happens.
